Will be in Sydney in 2012 and am thinking of doing some wine tourism in the Hunter. I'm interested in trying some Semillon, esp. with some age on it. Tyrrell's Vat 1 I know, but who are the other producers I should look for and/or visit? All advice appreciated.

Brokenwood

Probably others as well, but as they are imported to the U.S. I've had a chance to try both of these.

It's worth seeking out older vintages of McWilliams Mount Pleasant- their Elizabeth and Lovedale bottlings are fabulous about 10-15 years after bottling, although you're probably more likely to find them in Sydney (or at Langton's) than in the Hunter.

-Eden (if you're dining on someone else's credit card, see if you can track down a bottle of the old Maurice O'Shea Shiraz (pre-1956) or the 1965 Lindemans Bin 3110 & 3100 Hunter River Burgundy, a wine that is in my top-5 of all the Oz wines I've tasted. Hunter reds don't really get much more better)

Slowly swirling around the world, eh Mark?
(This is where I insert the 'green envy' emoticon)

Never been, but I share your enthusiasm for trying older semillons.

Two young Turks producing excellent semillons out of the Hunter are:

Andrew Thomas of Thomas Wines (ex Tyrrell's wine maker)
Garth Eather of Meerea Park

Both should have semillons back to early 2000's to taste if you ask nicely.

Pokolbin Estate also have semillons back to last century - made by Andrew Thomas though the soils aren't really top notch alluvial to make top semillons.

Thanks very much for recommendations, gents. I've written them down for future reference. Since we'll spend 2 days in the Hunter, I hope to be able to report back with some useful information gleaned there.
