Boatloads of Cheap Crap XIII: Changes

Chris:

Though I hesitate to say so openly, I haven't read the whole Crap oeuvre. Have you reviewed the Jacob's Creek fizz (their standard brut pinot-chardonnay product)? At $8-11, it's decent, and has actual fruit, as opposed to many Cavas in the same range. It's a great mid-week stir-fry match-up.

Thanks for the notes.

I've reviewed a number of Jacob's Creek wines, the most recent (in Boatloads XII) being the 'Reserve' cabernet sauvignon, but I've never seen a fizz on the shelves around here. Perhaps the fact that I don't really drink a lot of fizzy stuff has something to do with it, though. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Re: "good parellada fruit and a nice dash of xarelloishness".

Thanks for finally finding the right descriptors for Peneds whites, Chris. I will unabashedly copy this line in any future tasting notes.

PS The La Yunta wine should have been under the 'Americas' heading. It's from Argentina.

Whoops. I'll correct for the library version. Thanks for the correction.

I've made a study of Peneds whites, and I have finally come to believe that I am able to verbally sum up their unique charms. I appreciate the validation.

Charles Smith Wines Riesling Columbia Valley 'Kung Fu Girl' 2007 ($12). Cheerfully aromatic, light pineapple and pear with a touch of beanbag chair, a hint of peachblossom and a light mineral streak. Tastes just barely off-dry, with bright limey acidity and a firm, compact mouthfeel. There's a friendly obviousness about this wine, it just seems really happy to see you. I'm not sure what's up with the Kung Fu thing--there's a logo of a rice bowl and crossed chopsticks on the back label, I guess it's meant to suggest the wine would be good with Asian food? Which makes sense, it seems like it would. No, it's not Clos Ste. Hune, but this is a really nice, fresh, happy riesling with a lot of flavor and fine, nervy balance. In fact, it makes me want to do a silly little dance. Great summer picnic wine. (As I'm typing this, Lisa, who is usually fairly mum on everyday wines, comes up behind me and says "This is really good!" I respond "I know! I'm writing a glowing review right now!") SCREWCAP! [Buy again? Enthusiastically, yes.]

This is kind of a Bernie Madoff wine. There's actually no particular vineyard, there's just a clever label. I think Charles Smith sold the label for millions of dollars to some giant company.
