TN: '04 Dom. Valette Vir-Cless

MLipton

Another of the wines purchased during my outing to Aug with Sharon, opened tonight with some grilled mahi-mahi. Initially showing some oxidative notes both in the nose and on the palate, it later became much more vibrant, with zingy acidity, pineapply fruit and a fairly subtle whack of oak on the finish. Very tasty, and a good match for the fish.

Hm, interesting note. The oxidative overtones are what I love so much about Valette (within reason; see earlier post about displeasing Clos de M. Noly).

I just had a quite nice bottle of 2006 Domaine des Chazelles Vir-Cless Vieilles Vignes the other night -- unoaked, very nicely balanced and intensely flavored.

It wasn't at all off-putting, Sharon, even to my oxidatively challenged wife. What intrigued me was how the oxidative overtones had essentially disappeared midway through the bottle (which is to say at least 30 min after opening). Maybe this was the result of more fruit evident in the nose, but even the acidity seemed to ramp up after a bit. The overall impression was that it was getting younger the longer it had been opened, a property that we could all hope to emuluate.

That's an interesting trend. There is so much going on in these wines. I would be curious to compare them side by side with other producers'. For me they step outside of the usual Mconnais register.

Any experience with 2004 Domaine de Roally Vir-Cless Tradition?
These wines are relatively "new" to me.

I just busted a move on the 2005 of this (I also may or may not have gotten jiggy with it) and it's awesomely focused and intense -- like a great Chablis.
