FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER - Medium Rare - Cleveland Park, Washington, DC (9/9/2011)

Met up with Bob, Selma, Faryan and Tim for a relaxed dinner at Medium Rare. Lots of fun with a really fun selection of wines. Thanks to the team at Medium Rare - service and food were as good as always.

2007 Domaine Rémi Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Les Genevrieres continues to be my go-to place in Meursault. While this didn't have the wonderful flinty-ness the 2002 had, I enjoyed its primary lemon, seashell, and dried herbal tones. It had seductive weight without being dense...a quality that I really enjoy.
2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Soaring nose of red florals, smokey minerals and dark fruit. Probably darker and denser than previous Corcelette's, this wasn't heavy or cumbersome at all. Felt the palate will continue to improve as some of the angular herbal tones soften a bit, but it's already a stunning wine. Why don't I buy more of this?
1991 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

A real treat. Nose had a good deal of sherry with lithe red fruit and potpourri. The palate featured nice smokey herbs, subtle florals, and a reductive fruit quality that was interestingly not abrasive. This was my first time having the 1991 Gran Reserva and would like to try another to see if the reductive qualities are consistent.
2007 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

This was opened 8 hours prior to dinner. Thought the nose had a certain reductive quality to it...showed a lot of anise seed...luckily the palate is just beautiful - with lithe red fruit, a distinct sauvage component and subtle minerality. It's age is keeping it from becoming the star the 2006 is, but this will emerge from its shell one day and be a wonderful example of what St. Joseph can be.
2005 Tardieu-Laurent Crozes-Hermitage Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Nice perfumed nose of purple florals, subtle meat, sous bois and dark fruits. Palate wasn't as seductive as the nose, and will need time to even out. Thought it was a bit primary, but did show some nice substance - bacon, lilac and some charcoal. Wasn't as modern as other TL's I've had.

How much is corkage at Medium Rare?

Also, what type of steak do they have? Strip steak? It sounds like it is a pretty satisfying experience. Not quite Ray's the Steaks level, though, I'm assuming?

The chemistry eludes me, but seems odd for it to be oxidative and reductive at the same time.

Corkage was $0 for us, and the steak they have is flank steak I believe. You get two servings for $19.99 and a salad - it won't change your life, but is a fun spot (very lively and loud on a Friday night).

Thanks Matt for the information. Is free corkage the standard corkage rate at Medium Rare or is it the ITB in Cleveland Park special?

That's a good question. I've only eaten there with Tim from Weygandt Wines, so there might be some sort of deal worked out. I'll chat with Tim today and get a more specific answer to you.

the one time I asked I was told there's a one bottle limit - not sure that's still in place tho.

the cut is not flank although the way it is sliced makes it resemble flank steak. I think it's what they call the culotte.

Served with excellent frites too - I can't go back because I don't need to patronize a place that offers refills of fabulous fried potatoes!
