06-07 Baroli

07s are problematic. I've written enough about the vintage for now but have mixed feelings. Some great wines, Burlotto's Monvigliero was as good as it got, the Brovia's where also impressive, proving to me that Brovia is on top of their game.

Beyond that there are plenty of wines that are delicious, but far too many that are hot, raw, flabby, and otherwise unattractive.

I vintage to buy before you try that is for sure.

Isn't it always the case that far too many wines are not that good - one way or another, whether hot, flabby - and not only in Piemonte? Which leads one to buy the wines of only a select - and by that I do not mean exclusively elite - group of producers, who seem to, somehow, make enjoyable wine year in year out... Even before trying, in fact, because at least in my case, I cannot claim the expertise that based on a bottle or two that I try, I can foresee where/how the particular wine will end up.

Which by the way, Jeff and Greg, makes it even more relevant to have a 2007 Barolo Wine Divergence party. For which I am all in.

Anyone have an opinion on Fratelli Giacosa? The 06 Barolo (regular) and 06 Barbera "Maria Gioana" are available here at less than scandalous prices.

For 6 bottles!!! That is $50 per bottle, when the 06s and 07s sell for $70+. I'd gladly split it with you if you want to take it to the US.

Wish it were so, the 6x (common here) only means that you can pay in six installments on your credit card.

Jeez Louise.

I had the 07 Marcarini Brunate the other night.

A perfectly fine wine but a bit of alcoholic heat showed and the wine lacked detail or aromatic intrigue, and had fiery, coarse structure that didn't help it.

A "meh" wine for me, I'm sure it will drink decently in time but nothing to seek out, it showed, to me, like a hot vintage with underripe phenolics and the detail cooked out of the wine.

Given all the heat that the 2007 vintage is taking (or took), you might be interested in some leftovers from 05 and 06. Binny's has some awesome prices for the 2006 Grasso Gavarini Chiniera, 2006 Giuseppe Rinaldi Brunate Le Coste, 2005 Vietti Rocche and 2005 Conterno Cascina Francia. I am saying Chicago-ans because most of these are in-store only, so no shipping.

Josh, I'll get the 2007 Marcarini today, let it rest and give it a try in a few days.

How much are the Rinaldi Le Coste and Viette Rocche?

I'd be leery of 05 Cascina Francia, personally. It was awesome from cask but two bottles have been incredibly raisined and bitter, and I've heard similar opinions from others.
