Olivier Cousin and the AOC

I haven't always loved the guy's wines, but criminal prosecution seems to be way over the top for label jokes.

Sign the petition here.

The people who really ought to go to jail are the idiots in power who think things like, say, there should be no white grapes in the Touraine other than SB.

I would guess that one should not sign the petition unless one is a winemaker, winestore worker, importer or journalist, though.

Too late for me.

Drinking a lot doesn't count?

You can sign as a wine drinker but they need your address.

Well, you can sign of course. But the petition begins, "we, winemakers, etc." so, unless you know something I don't, that implies that perhaps you ought not unless you fit into one of the categories under "we."

My experience of petitions is that people count signatures more than they read them.

Usually, probably. But, if you will forgive the pedantry, the history of the Charter in Victorian England speaks against the value of multiplying names with forgery. And since there are sure to be advocates of prosecuting Cousin, to the very extent that the petition is effective, they will surely question the status of the signatories to the extent that they can.

The best solution would be to rewrite the petition to allow it to be signed by all interested parties, but that's above my pay grade.

The English version includes "consumers."

This is SO fucked up. Wish there was something we could do, other than buy the guy's wines.
That's the point they want to prevent you from buying the guy's wine. As if once prevented from buying Cousin's wines you'd pick something mainstream from the AOC. You're into cryovaced stuff right?

Their intent is too transparent, but there's got to be a better way to thumb our noses at the misguided missiles than buying wines we don't necessarily like [in truth, I have never tasted a Cousin (only My Cousin Vinny), but SFJoe's iffiness is good enough for me]. In any case, last night I went ahead and signed the petition on the Jenny & Francois site, identifying myself as a bloody consumer.

That's what I get for not scrolling down. Thanks.

Hi guys, I'm the Jenny and Francois webmaster. FYI, I added the consumers part of the letter after reading some of the above comments. I had translated the french directly originally, but then after I saw some consumers were signing the petition, I thought it made sense. Thanks for signing the petition. Stay tuned for more news on our blog as it happens!
