The event was held at Ward 3, a nearby bar-restaurant. The lineup reads like a report from the WD search engine, but you knew that.

The LDM team, the CSW team and some of the usual hangers-on were there to do the pouring.

The event started slowly, partly due to the nice weather, partly due to weekend work on the subways, and partly due to extravagant activity on another forum that involved a lot of NYers. By the time I left, however, the place was pretty busy.

This was a walk-around event so I only do 'snap judgment' notes.

More on La Butte please? That's so disappointing to me given the vintage.

Oh and 2009 Maisons Brulees L'Erebe is crystal clear and gorgeous tonight, but very very tightly coiled. One for the cellar for sure.

Well, the most important thing to say is that I am not a Puzelat fan, so it is not likely that I will like his wines.

That said, it was too much like following a donkey around for my tastes.

I suppose I do not disagree that it was a bit like following a donkey around, but I really enjoyed this wine and thought it was the best at that particular table at the tasting. Different strokes, I guess. Also, I thought the Coudert showed well, as it has each of the three or four times I have tasted the 2010 "regular" bottling. Other than that, you and I had quite similar snap judgments.

To me it seemed wild in an all over the map kind of way. I don't remember it having much focus, which I usually find in the few other vintages of Clos des Briords that I have tasted. But that said, I have never had a chance to try the 1996 before, so I am not qualified to opine on whether this bottle may have been off or if the wine is just in a strange place right now.
 
It was a lovely event.

The stunner of the day for me was the Occhipinti Frappato, which was gorgeously aromatic and Burgundy-esque. Light on its feet too at 12.5% alcohol. Back up the truck on that one, IMHO, notwithstanding the price tag. The Brun Morgon and 2010 Clos de Briords were also beautiful.

Like Jeff I wasnt moved by the 96 Briords. It just seemed kind of muted aromatically and surprisingly diffuse on the palate, but to be fair to the wine, it's placement at the last table meant that I had tasted about three dozen other wines before getting to it and fatigue had set in.

I agreed that the la Butte smelled funky in a not-pleasing way. I love the producer but have found that to happen with his wines from time to time.

IIRC this was served from magnum (it was like wine number 38 though) and my take was I never had a '96 Briords taste so young. It was all acid and just a hint at the finish of any "secondary" characteristics coming through.

Also loved the Occhipinti Frappato. Sicily's answer to Pineau d'Aunis.
 
I sense the sinister shade of Herr Rodenstock.

I think there were more real magnums of '21 Petrus bottled than '96 Briords.
