Check your sanity at the doorstep

2006 Bourdy rouge is working for me tonight. Much more approachable than 2005 on release. 2004 Nigl Riesling Privat is in a good place, too. Don't know that it's crazy inducing, but happy stuff nonetheless.

Not being one given to swooning, I find it difficult to identify wines that'll provoke lunacy. I will say, though, that wines that have rocked my world in various ways this year were a '61 Beychevelle, most of Chidaine's '08s and Baudry's '10 Rosé. I'm staring at 3 cases of wines just in from Envoyer, however, and planning ahead for Turkey day, so this list is likely to undergo revision before long.

A cheap Italian rosé, drunk out of a plastic cup, sitting on the ramparts of a hilltop medieval fortress town, watching the sun set on the plains of Umbria.

That would be a bulk rosé poured out of a re-purposed 2 liter no-name bottled water container (green in color) while perched in the open window of a rented apartment over hanging the Grand Canal. The tourists in their gondolas waving as if we owned the place.

Been there, loved it.

I've heard a lot of positive things, but are these perhaps closing down? I finally got around to an 08 Les Bournais last week and it seemed a bit awkward.

Come to think of it, cheap Patagonian Malbec (a very different creature from Mendozan Malbec) served in plastic cups in a long abandoned shepherd's hut, on a now uninhabited (except the penguins) island in Tierra del Fuego accompanied by wood grilled steak, chicken and sausages was pretty darned bliss inducing.

They could be. Though it has been the '08 Le Bouchet that I have consistently been impressed by, and that was still wide open as recently as a month ago. I haven't had the Les Bournais.

Though news like this doesn't do much for the sanity:
