Yesterday I got home at 8pm to a kitchen in ruins, not having had the chance to plow through piles of plates, veal bones, and sticky-bottomed glasses from a dinner party the evening before before running out for the whole day to work on manuscripts. A geste qui sauve, however, had fortunately been made by me at the end of that previous night: I did in fact remember to recork the one bottle of eight we had not finished, a 1999 Roblet-Monnot Volnay 1er Cru "L'Ormeau."
As I sipped a remaining glass of Volnay (it had smoothed out and was plying its Volnay delights) and tried to maneuver around my hobbled kitchen (knocking over a basket of walnuts, pressing my palm inadvertently into sticky gooseberry juice runover from the remains of a tart, etc.) and make something to eat for that evening, I wondered what I would open next.
2006 Domaine du Cros Marcillac "Lo Sang Del Pas" - probably not often a chaser to Volnay 1er cru, but interestingly, this little pup held its own. It's always (well, since 2004) been my favorite Marcillac, and did not disappoint in the least yesterday evening (with pan-seared duck breast). If it lacked the Volnay's complexity and depth, it was on its surface full of appealing rustic fruit and bramble and a good, refreshing finish. Glad I have more.
