What to do with de Bartoli Samperi Vecchio...

I have a couple of bottles coming and desire the collective wisdom concerning things to eat with them. Cheese? Nuts? Doritos? Nothing? Do tell.

I used to pair harder cheeses pretty regularly, but I think it is a wine of meditation, really.

I enjoy getting the 5, 10, and 20 together and doing a lead in. The differences are pretty stark. Starting in on the 20 is like starting in with the chorus. Nothing wrong with that, though.

This is one of my favorite wines fashioned from the earth. Maybe you will also enjoy it.

Thanks Levi, I was hoping you'd come around to let me know. I do hope you're feeling better.

p.s., one of the Benanti boys came to Paul Wasserman's shop in LA to do some tastings. I couldn't make it up from San Diego but we may finally see some Pietramarina on the west coast. Hopefully I'll try it one of these days.

I bought some Pietramarina on closeout a couple of weeks ago from a west coast shop (I think for about $28 each).

Is the 2006 the next vintage coming out? I bought 2005s.

Thanks, Mike. There are still a lot of tests going residual this and that, but things are on the upswing.

A good bottle of Pietramarina is a very good thing indeed.

I don't know who the former west coast importer was, but many of the bottles I purchased of vintages 2001 - 2004 had storage issues. There also appeared to be a closure issue with many bottles of the (stunning) 2001.

I love Pietramarina and look forward to being able to purchase good bottles on the west coast again soon.

Slaton, have you tried any of the 2005 Pietramarina yet? I bought mine at jj buckley and I am hoping there are no heat or closure issues with them.

Did Benanti change west coast importers with the 2005 vintage?

It looks like the current importer is Wine Warehouse. No idea who was bringing them in earlier.
I haven't purchased anything post-2004 vintage.

Thank you for the information.

Benanti's enologist used to be a fan of very low SO2 levels, which might explain bottle variation of at least some vintages. On the other hand I've had a 10 year old Pietramarina that was strikingly good in Italy.

It seems I have two 01's still. Sounds like I should've gotten to them a while ago. Maybe, hopefully they'll show something like what Oliver experienced. Importer was Vino Bravo, Aliso Viejo CA.

I had one of two anchovy epiphany moments last spring in Italy. One of them was at the DeBartoli VinItaly booth, tasting Vecchio Samperi for the very first time with Sebastiano DeBartoli, along with some of the most delicious cured anchovies that he brought over from Sicily.
