CWD: '01 Patricia Green Shea Pinot Noir

Stephen South
2001 Patricia Green Shea Pinot Noir Yamhill County, alc 13%, $33: Now we're talking..drinking much younger than 7 years of age... dark fruit with earthiness and a gentle mild sweetness.. some tobacco notes...no sharp edges anywhere... no alcohol and no wood showing..might be similar to a younger Villages wine from Burgundy..

This was likely a very "big" wine when young.. now it has mellowed and is moving into a good drinking phase

Interesting, never had these wines. Would you compare it to any village in particular?

Perhaps LeClerc,Roblet-Monnot, Girardin... not Leroy, Chevillon, etc...
In fact, I like the other vineyards from P. Green more than the Shea

I was thinking more of whether it reminded you of Pommard or Vosne, Chambolle or Savigny-les-Beaune, etc..

Either way, I never get around to drinking much US pinot noir but am always intrigued when I hear about good ones.

Shea is a great vineyard, because it always taste like Shea. I always get blue fruits from this site, and prefer drinking the wines from Shea after a few years of bottle age, say, rather than like 10.

Freedom Hill Vineyard, in the Coastal Range, particularly Ken Wright's bottling always reminds me of Pommard, and I believe this vineyard is planted entirely Pommard clones.

Many of the vineyards in the Dundee Hills remind me of Nuits St Georges. They are spicy, showing some red fruits and extremely pleasurable.

Eola Hills is more serious, with dark, brooding fruits. I like these wines with a few more years on them. More Vosne-like, I think.

In 2006, I bought mainly Balcombe from Patty Green. I have to admit, I drank more than I should have, and it is such a fruit bomb right now (a lot of 2006's are), but I think should get better in a few more years. One night when I asked my girlfriend what she wanted for dinner, she said, "Balcombe!"

2007, a mix of Winderlea, Ana, Whistling Ridge, and Balcombe 1B. The key is patience.
