THE WINES...

A. et P. de Villaine Aligoté Bouzeron '09 -- Pale yellow, floral scents, citrus and tropical fruit tones, maybe some herbaceousness, medium body, lively, some density, savory.

Maison Deux Montille Meursault Poruzots '06 -- Straw yellow, light oak/butter, medium toasty fruits, good acid backbone, good grip, typical Meursault character, good mouth feel, not a big profile.

Rapet Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne '00 -- Golden yellow, complex bouquet, hints of apples, solid core of fruit, true to its varietal, excellent staying power, nice roundness, delicious.

Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis Les Loups 1er Cru '05 -- Medium dark red, good spice, dark cherries, some earthiness for complexity, tightly knitted, likely to mellow well.

Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru '04 -- Dark red, refined almost feminine bouquet, red cherries/berries, ample acid, balance, good structure and purity, a 2004 showing well.

Domaine Joseph Drouhin Clos Vougeot Grand Cru '02 -- Ruby red, black cherries, nice spice, earth and gamy flavors, smooth texture, enjoyable richness, reserved profile, no edges, nothing not to like.

THE CULINARY DELIGHTS...

Love those main dishes. The cheeses seem a bit dull. (I mean, a Brillat-Savarin has to be really, really perfect in order to be good. And why two triple-cremes? And why morbier, which is thoroughly over-exposed?)

Jeff, such good points.

Let us weep a moment for Morbier.

I had a couple of really gobsmacking versions some ten years ago. But otherwise, it's string cheese with a stripe.

Hilarious.

Interesting comments, especially with respect to the cheese course. Some people (including JoAnne) thought the cheese course might have been the best course of the evening.

These cheeses did avoid being too overwhelming for the Burgundies.

As to the Morbier, I can see how it might not appeal to everyone.

All in all, this presentation of cheeses worked well with the two Clos de Vougeots.

Really?

Well, I've seen it used both ways here, so hard to tell sometimes.

I think that your irony meter is in urgent need of recalibration, Ian.

Mark Lipton

No doubt. Do you consult in such matters?

Would that I could, Ian. It is essential, though, to strike while the irony is haut.

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week folks. Don't forget to check out the gorgeous buffet after the show.
