The second (and still somehow losing) bid was also made by a regular Disorder poster. And it is not me.
 
Is it customary for people to make such a big leap in price from one bid to the next?

Or is there some kind of "top" the previous bidder indicated which the second one must surpass?
 
Typically one enters a maximum amount he or she wishes to bid, and Winebid will automatically (and repeatedly, if necessary) bid the minimum necessary to win the lot, up to the maximum amount selected. Essentially what you have described in your second question.
 
Bids on this lot need only be $1 higher. The second bidder must have been attempting to blow away, scare away others. It didn't work. With premium, shipping and possibly sales tax, this is now north of $150 from the winner. Yikes.

Thanks, Mark. I'm almost glad I didn't win it at $75. I suspect Pierre Overnoy and Manu Houillon would think anyone crazy enough to pay $75 for their Ploussard doesn't deserve to drink it. In my defense, though, LDM raised the price on the latest release to about $60 retail, so that's how I justified it. At $130, no thanks. Especially for a wine where storage is damn important.
