TN: green eggs and ham

Okay, maybe not quite. How about green Lafarge and duck instead? Michel Lafarge, Volnay, 'Clos du Chateau des Ducs', 2004 was all full of green-ness, which I had been prepared for from reading the interweb. Even my wife, who does not pay attention to wine at all said 'this doesn't taste like Burgundy', and I would have to agree with her. The color is pale with some browning notes already, this is a tough tannic shell of a wine with some cherry-strawberry hiding in the closet, but it doesn't want to come out and play, being buried by the tannic shroud and covered by the offensive and prevalent green notes that stick to it like seaweed. This is some nasty shit and glad I bought this on closeout and only have one bottle of it. All this being said, however, it isn't an altogether terrible match with the roasted duck, and I didn't need to pour it out either. I have a strong tolerance for greenness, so I pretended I was having an off-year Loire cot or cab franc.

Normally, there are much cheaper ways to get that fix. But the price on this has probably dropped a lot, so it depends when you bought.

It could be worse, Mark. On T-day itself, a bottle of '91 Morot Savigny Les Vergelesses was badly corked. Last night, with leftovers, a bottle of '08 Lafarge L'Exception was even more badly corked. Talk about nasty shit.

Bummer.

I'd hoped the upper tier was less or even not afflicted, as I have a few of each that I had not yet dared open. Hopes for "aging out" appear to be a hollow fantasy.

Vergelesses Batailleres? Have you had much of that? How have you liked it when it's not corked?

Sorry, Ian, this was first of two bottles that I bought recently on the cheap (perhaps I know why now). I've had good bottles of older Morot wines, but none from that monopole. I'll let you know when I open the other bottle.

I had this from magnum last night- not corked thankfully. My first bottle from this vineyard. It was good, a bit austere - especially when compared to the '99 Ecard Narbantons we had along side - and tasted much younger than its 20 years. I liked it, but kept thinking maybe I should have opened a 750ml bottle instead and kept the magnum for a while longer.

I did have the bottling in '06 and '09 at a retailer tasting with Geoffroy Choppin. I don't recall much from those other than I bought the Beaune Teurons instead...

I opened an 05 Bataillere about half a year back. Obviously way too young, but showed potential. Vergelesses is a good vineyard and Morot a good producer, so you'd expect good things.
