I didn't know until I heard the rebroadcast of Terry Gross' interview last night. What a shame. Listening to "Tribute" here this morning on an original release 1972 German ECM pressing, and boy, gang, it sounds so good.

The Terry Gross interview is quite wonderful, full of memories about Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, and really a great listen even for those peripherally interested.

Another jazz giant passes.

Yeah, I caught that interview, too, though I'd already heard the news. His candor regarding his relationship with Bill Evans was marvelous, as were the snippets of music that they played.

I remember hearing Bill Evans play along with Carmen McRae vocalist as the double bill presentation at a jazz joint known as Concerts By The Sea in Redondo Beach CA 25+ years ago. It happened to be Carmen's birthday and as she was finishing her set a voice sang out from the audience the birthday song. To make a long story short it was Sarah Vaughn who had come to hear Carmen and wish her a happy birthday. They were long time friends. The two singers then proceeded to improvise together for about 40 minutes on jazz standards and at one point Evans sat at the piano with Carmen's accompanist and comped along. Fabulous musical evening. One of those times in life where you happen to luck out. Being older has had some advantages.

I was lucky enough to catch Paul Motian playing with Joe Labarbera and Bill Frizell in some teeny little dive in Manhattan back in '87. There was like 5 tables in the place. I remember how lovely, poetic and nearly abstract his drumming was then (and those other guys weren't half bad, either...)

Sunday at the Vilage Vanguard, Explorations & Waltz for Debby are my daily companions since 1985
Best regards
