For Sherry lovers only- Hidalgo-La Gitana, Bodegas NV Jerez Amontillado Napoleon VORS 30 yr

It was interesting to see the divide. I was told this was a contemplative wine and it was. Pure, penetrating and complex, it really rewarded attention. About half the people who tried it were fascinated and said it was one of their wines of the night. The other half made a face and dumped it out.

Sort of amazing to realize the short shrift that sherry usually receives in these environs. Occasional blips are all the more noteworthy.

Some people expressed surprise that the wine was not sweet. Insert appropriate emoticon of your choice here.

It worked well with Raclette.

This wouldn't have anything to do with that David Hyde Pierce wardrobe malfunction at the Emmy's would it?

What is this Shah-ri of which you speak? Are there Persian melons in it? If so, how many?

I don't know that I would describe it as regal so much as philosophical. But perhaps cher-ri would be be appropriate.

That half can be safely described as lacking a discernible level of wine culture. Even worse than making a face and dumping a Gravner out.

No, not at all. Everyone has their own palate preferences. I do that all the time with what people assure me are perfectly respectable Chateauneufs. Not to mention things like SQN, etc.

Comparing great sherry with 16% CdP or with SQN seems quite disingenuous to me, Jay. Again, a matter of wine culture.

Victor I doubt Jay chose these two types of wine based on similar alcohol levels. Jay mentions CdP because he seldom likes it (IIRC). SQN was mentioned because it was part of a recent jeeebus recounted elsewhere.
Maybe Madeira would have made a better reference point. The VA in Madeira makes it undrinkable for some tasters. Sherry haters detest the "oxidized" mark that flor has.

Yes. Part of the Raclette and jamon jeebus at Suzanne's a week ago.

Yes, the SQN was, in fact, opened at the same dinner as the Sherry.

I don't care for 95% of Madeira either.

2003-bottled Hidalgo Palo Cortado VORS 30 years is amazing stuff, but I can't manage more than a small glass. The intensity of flavor is just overwhelming.

Certainly this is a fair statement. The same could be said for Valdespino Cardenal.

Most VORS sherries are meant to be drunk like cognac - very small amount, tiny sips, enjoy slowly... The concentration via evaporation is rather amazing.
