Jeff Grossman
attendees: Jason, Suzanne, her Italophile friend John, Jeff
This is the group's first visit to Buttermilk Channel, a creative comfort-food eatery in Carroll Gardens. Jason has been here before, though, so he offers a few details on the menu. We choose the delicata squash tart, lots of East Coast oysters, hanger steak, the leg of lamb Tuesday special, and several vegetable dishes, too. All were yummy, though the lamb was a little overdone.
But the people were not overdone and neither were the wines:
Cedric Bouchard NV Champagne Brut, Blanc de Noirs "Roses de Jeanne" - disgorged Juillet 2010 / V08; very young, crisp, zingy, green apple, chalk, love it
Nicolas Carmarans 2009 Vin de Pays de l'Aveyron "selves" - varietal chenin blanc grown in the region most famous for Marcillac; upon opening it has a very slight petillance and a twang that makes Suzanne call it 'cider'; with air it develops a very citrussy, slightly waxy profile; Loire chenin has a mineral streak that this does not have
Nicolas Carmarans 2010 Vin de Pays de l'Aveyron "l'Altre" - varietal mansois (a.k.a., fer servadou); deep and dark and leafy; not quite as pungent as the wine from Causse Marines but perhaps a little easier to use at the table; I like this
Dutraive 2009 Fleurie VV "Champagne" - juicy and full and earthy and just drinking like a champ
Dorde 2000 Vin de Pays des Coteaux du Salagou "Mas des Chimeres" "Cuvee Buster" - has a great nose, kinda plummy in the palate (though not so plummy as Jason says it used to have), the wine is interesting but spirity and a bit lifted; kinda has that new car smell; ultimately, eh
Bovio 1997 Barolo "Vigna Gattera" - A maker whose wine I have only rarely tasted but a favorite of John's (so much so that he ships them to himself from Italy). A great nebbiolo nose and the wine is weightless and fine and cinnamon-y. A pleasure.
