Oswaldo Costa
Last year we spent two weeks visiting eighteen natural wineries in the Loire, a marathon, but unforgettable. In addition to those we already knew, we visited some of the youngsters that Lerouge & LeBlanc singled out as chaud. One of them, Sébastien David, turned out to be one of our favorites. He is not the most social guy, but little by little, as the accumulated questions raised the temperature of his interest, a rapport began to grow: he was not totally wasting his time, not totally. Unfortunately, there was none, either to taste or buy, of an ungrafted cuvée called vin d'une Oreille, the spark of my initial interest. Whoever goes to Caves Augé, that’s one to look for.
His was the Kékazo, a curious and delish cab franc made from carbonic maceration in the barrel, TN’d recently. This cab franc is made more conventionally, 40 day maceration with weekly pigéage. It was bottled in December 2009 after two years in used barriques and tonneaux. Certified organic, with biodynamic highlights.
Expressive red fruit, graphite and plenty of leather. Wonderful acidity (2007 was not the most mature year) in ideal balance with the delicious fruity sweetness. Ideal, too, is the mouth weight. Ended quickly. Whoosh. Sigh. The perfect bistro wine. Dig that alcohol level.
The wines of Sébastien David are not imported yet. Shame on "they" who make such decisions on behalf of us tender consumers.
