NWR: thorens td 160 c. . . .

i was just given a thorens td 160 c that hasn't been out of its box for 20 years or so. everything seems perfect--shure v15 type iv cartridge--but i can't get the screws that hold the turntable to the chassis for shipping to loosen. corrosion? suggestions?

Probably best to take it to a shop where they have experience working on older turntables. They might have rusted in there and can be loosened enough to get them out but then they're going to need to replace them. And who knows what else might need to be fixed once everything has been freed up.

That being said, it's a good, old classic turntable, and if you've got a bunch of records sitting around they'll probably sound okay. The shop can also give you an idea as to how the cartridge still performs. It might be just fine, but you might also need to buy a new stylus for it. The Mark IV cartridge is worth keeping though.

I used to have that exact model (Rob Adler now owns it). I put a Dynavector moving coil cartridge on it.

Have you tried spraying some WD40 on a cloth and wiping it around the screws? If that doesn't work, take Eden's advice.

One more thing: you'll probably need to replace the rubber belt that connects the motor to the platter.

Well done. I lit up when I saw this. We have our own little Thorens sub-club here on WD. Here is mine. A TD125 Mk.1 with a Rega RB300 and Denon DL110.

Apologies for the hi ISO.

Thorens are suspended TTs and as such I really encourage you to seek out the local turntable guru and have them set it up for you. They can be a little finicky but respond well to attention from knowing people. It shouldn't be that expensive. I agree that you should just start out with a new belt and also I suspect with the age that you would benefit from a new cartridge - they do age, an unlike with wine it is not a good thing. But a listen will tell you that - have your tech check it out. I am a very big fan of the Denon DL 110 as a relatively cheap hi output moving coil cartridge - they pair great with Thorens TTs.

I used to have that exact model and that exact cartridge. Bought it in high school. Gave it to my brother when I moved to New York for graduate school, traveling lightly and all.

for all of you out there breathlessly awaiting the conclusion to my dilemma, here goes. the locknuts that hold the platter assembly tight to the frame are on the BOTTOM of the turntable (unlike any other turntable i've used).

(the screws i was trying to loosen were the wrong screws. no doubt good that they were too tight to undo.)

i celebrated with side one of the beatles white album.
