Great bottle of '96 Closel Papillion Cuvee Speciale

After reading about, and tasting, some less than stellar bottles of '96 Closel CDP CS all was made well again last night. The wine was just as it should be at this age, very aromatic, flowers and honey, full in the mouth with gentle sweetness, a subtle lactic note and plenty of zing. Ironically this was the worst looking bottle from my stash with the most ullage and a cork that was soaked all the way through. Go figure. Towards the end I noticed the smell of sulfite and a slight bite in the nose as one might find in young riesling which was kind of surprising. Had this bottle with homemade pot stickers and while chopping onions, garlic, ginger, etc. the scent of the glass of wine next to the cutting board overpowered them all. Amazing!

Also had a lovely and inexpensive tempranillo from Spain recently in the form of 2009 Montebuena Rioja Cosecha, Familla Burgo Viejo, or something like that. Beautiful fruit and dusty, herb tinged earthy flavor. Juicy, fresh and good. Cost about $13.

Other wines of note: 2009 Cuvee Classique Muscadet from Guy Bossard was wound up tight and wrapped in wool. Thought this was the easy drinker of the bunch but not today. And a 1996 Grandmont Bourguiel from Pierre Breton was just beautiful and ready to go. Last bottle, goodbye old friend.

Best,
Kay

Me too, I've had no problems - and the good ones are great. But at the moment the real stunner seems to be the '97 Papillon. Glad you have 2009 Muscadet from Guy Bossard, hope you keep it. (I guess you will.)
