What’s everyone favorite wine app for the iPhone? I am both a tech lover and wine lover and I have been spending lots of time playing with the wine apps on the App Store. With tons of products on the market (like wine), picking the right one is no easier task. After weeks of research, I figured that most of wine apps fall into one of following categories: Search, Collect, Social/Share, Food Pairing and Events. Below I have picked one of each of the first three categories as I am not very familiar with the other two, if you do, please share.
Search - Help you choose the right wine
App: Snooth Wine Pro
Price: US$4.99
Link: http://itunes.apple.com/app/snooth-wine-pro/id391031903
Review: The best thing about Snooth Wine Pro is that it lets you take a photo of the wine label and match it to their wine database, from there you can check user reviews, price and merchant information of the wine. Very useful when you encounter a wine that you are unknown of. I have run a test in a local wine store, Snooth Wine Pro recognized 4 out of 10 labels, while Hello Vino, its competitor, recognized 3. I guess the technology isn’t quite there yet?
Collect - Manage your wine collection
App: Cellar
Price: US$4.99
Link: http://itunes.apple.com/app/cellar-manage-your-wine-collection/id321262925
Review: Cellar helps you manage and more importantly, remember your wine collection. To add a bottle of wine to the “cellar”, you first choose the shape and color of the bottle and then take a photo of the wine label and fill in other details. When you have finished one of the bottles, you can move it to the “garage”. I used this app to manage my small cellar at home, but I was too lazy to keep my virtual cellar updated, it would be great if they can add a barcode scanner to save me from typing all those wine names.
Social & Share - Connects you with other wine lovers
App: WineMob
Price: Free
Link: http://itunes.apple.com/app/winemob/id462154542
Review: Wine social sharing apps help you connect with wine lovers beyond your Facebook/Twitter friends, it’s a new way to explore and share wines. Among other similar apps I have tried (Corkbin, tagmywine and SocialGrapes), WineMob stands out by being the only one to provide local pricing and merchant information of user reviewed wines, this is very important because it makes your sharing meaningful. WineMob also has a much better set of social features than the others, like a better user profile page and Facebook Timeline integration etc.
I hope you like these apps and thank you for your time!
