TN: Some reds from the cellar

Plucked a few from the archive this winter, why not, right?

In descending order:

1998 Savoye Morgon VV is solid Beaujolais but closing down a little since the last try a few years ago. Still quite lovely and very full in the mouth with warm fruit flavors and just the barest hint of rust.

1996 Chateau Meyney St Estephe just went down too easy. This one was on closeout for next to nothing way back when and happily it has softened into a nice old Bordeaux. Mature tannin, hardly any fruit, juicy and fairly long. Good bottle. Paired with NY strip steak and mushrooms.

1995 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses has finally budged. Still not there yet but on the way. So light and beautiful. Brett aromas and forrest and bramble and . . . you name it. Silky in the mouth with very fine tannin. Should last forever in a good cellar.

Hope this postcard is of use to somebody.

Best,
Kay

I opened a bottle from my old case of the '89 the other day in the office. What a great purchase that was. It was a lot of money for me in grad school, but it has repaid me well.

Jean got some of that '89 Meyney, too, but from different sources, I'm sure. What a great, honest bottle of claret that wine was and, I'm sure, still is. I'm also still living down my first encounter with the '59 Meyney, served blind to me at my 30th b-day party, in which I mis-identified it as an aged Zinfandel. So much for my career as a wine critic.

actually, among oceans of spoof in the 2005 vintage, meyney turned out to be one of the more honest bottles of brdx

Thanks for the update on the '96 Meyney, Kay. I just discovered one at my parent's place when I was adding wine to their cellar. I'll let them know they can go ahead and drink it.

Ha, a stray bottle of the '89 Meyney still sits in my cellar, perhaps the longest held wine I own. And the '88 I just picked up a few at auction for a pittance. Sentimental producer for me, when I was new to wine and even newer to earning money. I always found their mid-90s wines a bit soft and porky though. Honest, but not as textured as the '80s stuff.
