Teh big gunz

A wedding weekend in Malaysia, the day after the ceremony. Had a slightly cooked bottle of '90 Krug at a relative's place (guy is rich, what else is he going to spend on?) for tea, and another relative brought a bottle of Chivas Regal Royal Salute 21YO to dinner. Y'know, I really liked the latter - complex, smooth and really drinkable.

I'm sure there's more to be gleaned here than just the usual 'big boys make good stuff' but I'll leave that for another time.

But I did find myself hankering after a bottle of the 2009 Baudry Chinon at points during the weekend.

Dude, that's my birthyear. It's really, really nice - I've had it recently from both bottle and magnum.

It's too bad it's gotten so expensive. There was a period when the MV was really great around 2007 or so.

Happened to be around when this was opened a few days ago. Really came alive with some air. Will probably stand as a benchmark in my mind for the rest of my days.

Despite its ubiquity Chivas is better than expected across the board. Like Jadot Beaujolais-Villages, it's a useful life-raft in otherwise deprived circumstances. Sounds like the 21 was a bit more than that though.

Hard liquor is pretty big in East Asia for business entertainment. There's a lot of rough stuff further down the food chain, but the old timers have pretty fine palates and this particular relative has a nice stash of bottle-aged Guinness to go with the bottles of Chivas etc. The Jadot B-V comparison is apt. Would I buy the 21YO in preference to a single malt (cru Beaujolais) or even a Japanese single malt (Touraine and Savoie Gamay)? Probably not. But I'll quite happily drink it, especially when the host is a generous and fun guy.

Did Big Boy/KOC/Rob Rosania open?

No, it was a different person. Similar interest level and collection of Champagne, though.

Those 79s are pretty disorderly, aren't they ?

Salon was one of my favourites, not had it in years.

Winston was very good as well, and Bolly (RD) too. Lanson was a firm favourite during college (30 quid! For '79 Lanson!). Not had Oenotheque or Cristal, although I have a bottle of the latter from a friend.

1979 Taittinger Compte de Champagne is also fantastic (one of the only 2 '79s I've had - the other was heat damaged).
