Stephen Pinker did an interesting riff on this in "Words and Rules." It's the evolution of the language away from irregular conjugations and plurals. We've already (in the US) seen the transition away from spelt, dealt, lent, etc. It's only a matter of time, I'm sure, before the era of leafs, mans and womans.
