1999 Éric Texier Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Let it not be said that Joe Dougherty doesn't have a cruel playful streak. At the end of the evening, after an ocean of wine, he pulls this from his cellar, puts a bag over it and serves it to Texier and has him guess what it is. Eric doesn't think it's old enough to be Gentaz and so thinks maybe a '90 or '91 Verset. Ha ha! The joke’s on you, Eric. He thanks Joe for the opportunity to try it, to which Joe replies, "No, no! Thank you! You put it in the bottle. I only pulled the cork!"
The good news is that one did not have to be in attendance to know there is something seroiusly wrong with the above paragraph. Any takers?
Not entirely following you .sasha, but are you referring to the fact that Gentaz was made through the 1993 vintage so if he was going to guess 90-91 he should not have ruled it out? Or that the 99 Texier was showing as 8-9 years older than it's vintage?

I thought about that when he said it, but my take was that he considered '90 and '91 Verset to be much more youthful at this stage than Gentaz of a similar age.
Yes, that is the other angle, so .sasha would be disagreeing with that?

That was a whole lot of fun, although the avalanche of wines had me reeling most of the night. And I ended up with a strange craving for Nacho Cheese Doritos after the California Chinato. But I did learn a lot about city planning and water management from Julien Pinon.

That SFJoe is a cruel bastard. I brought wine with the promised beef stew in mind and he switched it out for veal in white wine at the last second!

Blame the cruel weather. Too hot for beef.

Where the hell are the photos?

Some will come. Not as pleased with them as I'd like to be. To make the host feel better I switched off the flash much of the time and with the lighting there, I just don't like how they came out.
fell for the no flash rule?

Nothing cruel at all about serving ET his own wine--he guessed his own wine heroes as the makers. I think he was pretty pleased to have put himself in their company, even if only by innocent mistake.

I guess I'm going to have to swap "cruel" out of the note. It was said tongue-in-cheek, but it seems as if no one got that. ...

In the words of the immortal Mick Jagger, "Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke." Don't go all sensitive on us, BJ!

eh?

I'm pretty sure he meant me, though no one really calls me that. My middle name starts with a J.

"In fact, it showed identically to one from magnum I had with John Williams in August, albeit with less vigil tannins."

Just out of curiosity, what are "vigil tannins"? Tannins that stand watch, ever alert for tongues to dry out?

The biggest problem with many wines in the market today is too little acid and too much spoof. Brad is the only wino I know moaning about wines having too much acid. Can you cure a sweet tooth by seeing a good dentist?
If anyone can answer that question in a positive manner I'll find a seat for you at our table for cassoulet saturday night.

BACON ???!!!

Where? I love bacon. I asked some tannins to keep watch for me in case any shows up but they seem to have missed this batch. Probably snuck off to Madiran again.

Maybe he meant "virile" but has been taking speech lessons from the 'varietal' folk?

I was thinking maybe he meant "Virgil tannins," tannins in dactylic hexameter.

If I ever spot bacon in Eric's aged Cote-Rotie, I am sending VLM straight down to Charnay, because he is much bigger than I am.

there were probably 30 other wines not yet mentioned, but I'd like to single one out - an amazing magnum of 88 clos de la bousse d'Or, thanks to Michael

Like I said, thanks for not inviting me.

I only got to try 5 of the above wines. But the 2002 Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee was beautiful, long and complex. The 1993 Prager was remarkably similar to the 1990 though a tad less intense. The 1984 Dunn Napa was slightly maderized - some heat damage along the way.
