OK, I really read this, I'm not having some was-standing-behind-a-car-exhaust-pipe-too-long experience.

Aux Deux Amis? That place is like ragged sweaters and hand-rolled cigarettes, with a natural wine list to match, by the sweat of vignerons' feet.

Others are of similar natural tone, incl. Vivant and Le Verre Volé.

Choice line: "One of my favorite Chateauneuf du Papes from La Vieille Julienne can be found here, as can some terrific Macon whites from Domaine Valette and some organically produced Beaujolais from Lapierre."

I've fallen, and I can't get up.

I personally sold Robert Parker 4 cases of Valette in 1994 or 5. I put them in the trunk of his car myself.

Plenty of people in the trade will vouch that the private Parker often behaves quite a bit differently than the public version.

My experience is dated, but I would vouch for that.

After the first few, the rest do seem less like personal stories and more like cut and paste from a guide book.

Yes, but Sharon Bowman's guide, not Michel Rolland's!

Mine is also dated, but he was for instance polite and gracious in my couple of encounters. This side doesn't come through so much in public these days.

Joe, I spent years on the Prodigy Board with RP and developed a high regard for his personal characteristics both through online exposure as well as through offline intermingling and through acquaintances in common.

. . . . . . Pete

Are we talking about what's in his glass or between the ears ?

If it's the former, my experience is even more dated than yours, but I saw no discrepancy whatsoever.
