The famously non-drinking Président de la République was in Vouvray earlier this week and drank two glasses of a white wine from 1890 served to him by "an organic winemaker." As Sylvie Augereau describes it in the Nouvel Obs, "he was astonished that it was still drinkable." Later, he inquired whether the "picking" still happened in September. Guess he isn't used to words like "harvest"....
 
That's an interesting story. What 'organic' producer has bottles of 1890 white wine kicking around waiting to be opened for an unappreciative candidate.

Also of note in the story, Sarzo's last glass of wine was in 2007 when first running for President. After tasting the 1890, he asked if the producer also made apple juice. He's doing his best to run against old-school French type!
 
I did a search for "Sarkozy boit du vin" and came up with a more complete article in La France agricole, which gives the organic vigneron's name as Dominique Allias of Domaine Allias.

Anyone heard of it?
 
I have some 96 moelleux knocking around my cellar. And maybe some older demi-sec and doux, somewhere, if I didn't drink it all. Respectable stuff.

Yes. I visited Allias with Nicos on my Loire trip two years ago.

Note the 1893 bottles in the pic, bottom left of the main stack.

Those are not mutually exclusive terms, winegrrrl. One can be President and still be a candidate for re-election, right?

Kermit Lynch imported Allias at one time, back in the early 1990s IIRC, and another local importer, Grape Expectations, did either just before or just after Kermit.

Not just not mutually exclusive. Here in the USA, the R-squared is nearly 1.0; office-holders are continually both incumbent and candidate.
 
Trueish for House Representatives, because of their short terms; presidents and, more so, senators get a little governing time between their campaigns. A key point of a democratic political system, though, is to ensure that elected leaders always pay some attention to their constituencies' views, so even regular governance can have a campaign-y feel.
