Well, I spent yesterday in front of a computer (but did manage to score some 2002 de Montille at HDH for a song).

Today will be different. Heading for mid-70s and sunny, low humidity and a nice, light breeze.

I'm reading Middlemarch for the first time, well trying to anyway.

Middlemarch, for the first time. I envy you. I reread it for the umpteenth time last summer for an article and still loved every word.

Hmm, maybe it's time to pull it out again. It's been about 20 years but I still have fond memories.

How are the boxwoods faring?

That most recent spraying with the organic oil stuff seems to have done the trick - no signs of little bug larvae at present and lots of new growth.

Now if I could only keep that damn black spot off my roses!

...damned aphids just descended in tiny multitudes upon my fragrant baby herb garden in pots! Parsley, cilantro, sorrel infected by teensy green goo insects that get fluffy as they grow and destroy the leaves (curling).
I've been crushing them by hand but it isn't going to be enough....
Help!
Ladybugs? I understand you can buy them by the bagful in some places. They love eating aphids.

Friday afternoon: fix up the electric fence to see that the elk stay out of the vegetable fields for the weekend. Water. Pick up wine at Marc D's house from our local star distributor that just closed its doors.

Sat morning. Sunny, 70 degrees and a gentle breeze. Pack up the kayaks and family and paddle 6 miles down Lummi Island amidst eagles and harbor porpoises to a small cove that feels like the middle of nowhere but is practically within sight of home. 4:00. Daytrippers leave. 2010 Immich Batterieberg CAI Reisling adequately chilled under a rock in the cool Puget Sound waters and ready for enjoyment.
Rock skipping contests. Fritillaria, Indian Paintbrush, Shooting stars. Smore's.

Sunday. Wake up to sunrise over Mt Baker. Ride the flood tide back to the truck. Gin and tonics while assembling a strawberry rhubarb pie to bring over to Moms.

Good weekend.

...will try all. Meantime,Oakland had a brilliant weekend... finished off with a lovely 2005 Pierre-Bise Anjou Villages "Schistes." Red tawny deep stuff; edgy tannins giving some fine structure to the red rose-jawed fruit.

Uh-oh. Who closed their doors?

it was so sad seeing all the wine being loaded into a big trailer

that CAI is really nice, especially the next day

Just downloaded it to my Kindle.

And just finished it two days ago. It was as good as I remembered though I found I'd misremembered some details over the years.
