I'm all about beer and Scotch and vintage Bartholomew maps and vintage bikes and foul weather gear and vinyl these days. Wine sucks.

Ullapool - Gairloch - Kalnakill - Plockton - Dunvegan - Uig - Lochmaddy - Tarbert - Stornoway - Butt of Lewis - Ullapool - Inverkaig - Durness - Maryhill - Scrabster - Orkneys - Aberdeen.

Riding a 1970 full 531 Gitane Tour de France, 650b conversion. A real sweetheart.

An excellent read is Sea Room.

Let's go laddies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're in Kyle of Lochalsh, eat at The Waverley. If they have it, make sure to order the cullen skink.

what about the gardens of inverewe? palm trees growing as far north as juneau, alaska. you gotta dig the gulf current before climate change shuts it down.

i did a very similar bike trip in september, 15 or so years ago. the sun came out as we left ullapool, and i never saw a cloud for another week. the color of the sea on the landing-craft / ferry to eriskay (no causeway then) was like a parody of caribbean tourist porn. breathtaking.

the gulf-stream can truly be a wondrous thing. but, as a barman (to whom i may have enthused just a little too much about said weather) reminded me, somewhat grimly, the previous two months had seen nothing but horizontal rain.

pack swim trunks, spf 30 and waterproof polar gear.
