TN: Potluck at Jay's (May 27, 2012)

Yes, the 98 Clos des Papes is a beautiful wine back when the place was known for the iron fist in the velvet glove. Since 03, they took off the velvet glove and started hitting you over the head with the iron fist (truth in advertizing, I stopped trying them after 04 because of price and reaction, so maybe it was just 03 and 04).

As the data points come in, fully disproving my original statement no positive tasting notes on CdP, it becomes clear that Sharon just didn't like the Pegau. These things happen, I hear. I withdraw all deeper category explanations.

I wonder if a rating would have clarified things!?!

Offhand, I can't recall any Pegau Chateauneufs that I haven't liked a good bit, if not a great deal.

The '95 has come in for a lot of criticism hereabouts. My one encounter with it was at the domaine in '98, when it was quite fine. My one bottle of it sits unopened still in my cellar so I can't contribute to the discussion.

The 95 isn't a terrible wine and it is showing about as well now as it ever will. But it always had more structure than fruit and it aged into an austere elegance that does not go well with Pegau. I'd open the bottle if you want to. It won't die, but it isn't going anywhere.

Jonathan, Mark, etal, I still have a good bit of the Pegau CNdP '95. I last had it about 5 years ago and my notes from then reflect favorably.

Guess I ought to pull a bottle and see what's what!

Jay, I don't think there was any intention of hijacking Jeff's thread. It is simply a matter of Pegau having always tended to generate a momentum of dialogue here and elsewhere.

If you liked it 5 years ago, you'll like it better now. That was about the time I traded some of mine with Dan Kravitz for a bunch of 99s. We had a 95 that night and it did not make me sorry for the trade.
