Travel to Cote Roannaise or Auvergne region recco's?

I am lucky to be traveling to France for two weeks on a not-really-vineyards trip with my sweetie. First stop after Paris is TGV to Avignon; explore Lirac region for a couple of days at most. Then drive through Gorges d"Ardeche and from there back towards Paris. A million choices, a few days! I want to visit the Cote Roannaise or Auvergne regions on the way back. We have 6 days to wander...
Has anyone got experience travelling there?
Obvious that the mighty NoRhone is looming and a magnificent tease but I may save it for another, personal and entirely selfish adventure.
