If it ain't corked its premoxed.
And it was so beautiful and promising when it was young . . .
Best, Jim

Yep. Benchmark Savennieres. The '96 Baumard Clos Papillon was also gorgeous on release and it's had the same fate.

Had a great bottle this past winter. Loaded with sulphur, though.

And at 16 years old is it really still premox or just mox?

Premox, since it's been like that for years now.

I guess the rule is drink '96 Closel from your cellar and Donnhoff from Bueker's.

Well, I'm about 50/50 on the Closel. Lots of corked bottles. Papin as well. All the 95 and 96 wines are hit and miss. Must have been some bad corks going around Anjou.

I've had a number of good '96 Closel Papillons, and hope to have some more since I still own quite a few.

Well, I bet we got them at the same place at around the same time and have had them in good storage all this time, so go figure.

This is disappointing, since I also have a lot of these buried in the cellar from the same source, with a naive expectation that they would follow a Huetesque aging curve. I guess I need to do a manual inspection the next time I visit my offsite storage. Any idea whether the '02's share this problem?

I think the last '02 I've had was a couple of years ago and it was fine, but remember, it was made in an oxidative style to begin with.

Fwiw, the '89s, '90s and '93s I've had over the past few years have all shown well, save for any corkers or the cooked batch of '90s that a bunch of the locals got.

Had my last '97 Closel Cuvee Speciale last week or so with Disorderly scottfrank and it showed some oxidation. Pretty wine still, fresher with air, not nearly as good as the last bottle. FWIW...
