Florida Jim
2010 Rochioli, Pinot Noir:
Pretty wine of the sweetly fruited variety; quite pure and quaffable. Not profound but an enjoyable drink for those who like lots of fruit.

1997 Jaboulet, Hermitage La Chapelle:
Complex and savory but thinning a bit at mid-palate. It seems to be tiring but is not gone.

2007 E. Vatan, Sancerre:
No green, no grass, no cat-pee; citric, good depth and sustain. Always a pleasure to drink Vatan. And superb with flat beans with hard cooked eggs and caper vinaigrette.

1991 Chat. Montelena, Cabernet Sauvignon:
Charitably, call it “bottle bouquet” but this is a bit swampy; never lost that swamp water smell and the fruit has shrunk. Maybe bottle variation; I have one in my cellar and will try it soon.

2010 Navarro, Muscat Blanc (dry):
Lightweight and very aromatic; crisp and almost ethereal on the palate. A wine of character without weight.

2010 Jadot, Beaujolais-Villages:
Served cold and I liked it that way; a cheerful rendition of the AOC and a wine that is just plain fun. With grilled chicken, a delight.

2006 Araujo, Cabernet Sauvignon:
Slick, oaky and even when I have had a few, I don’t want any more of this. Not my style.

Also tasted some Morey wines with friends and several made an impression:
2006 Jadot, Clos de la Roche; open, balanced and already showing complexity; a lovely wine.
2006 Clos de Lambrays; relatively open and initially quite pure; got a little out of focus with air.
1973 Clos de Tart; tending toward soy but not gone yet; very complex and savory.
1998 Vogue, Bonnes Mares; a brute but toward the end of the evening, it began to show some potential. Hold.

Best, Jim

Jim, I've still got a bunch of this together with a long string of Montelenas before and after this vintage. The '87 is still singing.

I look forward to your report.

Love Vatan, but not at the coin Weygandt is charging for it now.
Had a brilliant 2002 last night. Sticker on it said $27.99. Might have been grey market.

Speaking of coin... this is like $60 now. I recall visiting Rochioli, and buying/drinking a bunch of this, many years ago. I think the wines were around $20. Then, they were discovered and the price took off.

That sounds ballpark like what I remember the pricing being at the time (i.e. on release). And if I remember correctly it was in the years following the 02 that the whole 'retirement' thing got going and the prices started jumping dramatically.

No, you're right. On both counts.

A friend opened a bottle of the 2009 (the daughter's first year) Clos de Néore last night. 15%! Wonder what gives.

I'm sure fatboy will chime in regarding modern viticultural practices. Must be the baleful Foucault influence.

I only visited the man once, in 2007. My knowledge of French ( three words, two of which I can pronounce ) exceeded the man's awareness of English. We were therefore confined to communicating in Nadsat.

Frankly, is it so difficult to grab a scrap of paper and scribble 15 followed by %, ! and ?

That's about what I paid for my 2002s from Weygant.

My best guess is that 2005 is also 15%. I had it during the visit. Three of us finished the bottle. It was one of the greatest young whites I've ever had. I had it again as recently as this past December, and despite the unmistakably high octane it continues to blow me away. Why ? Because it's a stroke of genius, and possibly one of a kind as far as my personal taste is concerned.

I had the 1997 three weeks ago, and it wasn't shy by any means, if not quite in the 15 range. If anything, the alcohol becomes more pronounced with age as the wine gets less (for lack of a better term) fruity, but the 1997 is a slightly different beast with more RS to begin with, and thus with more buffers down the road. That aside, the overall experience wasn't that different, as I had gone from a state of slight shock due to the wine's apparent size to a state of complete enchantment.

I have not tasted the 2009.
