Food at RSJ is reasonable, and the list is great.
Or it used to be. It was fairly picked over a year ago.

Anyone been lately?

Ah, here you go: http://www.rsj.uk.com/rsjwinelist.htm
I have for a lunch and then even more recently a dinner and Chablis offline. The food was good to very good at both.

Of course one of the main attractions is the extensive Loire wine list [above] but clearly one has to love the Loire [we go every year for 8-10 days] or BYOB [by arrangement] since there is very little else.

259 Hackney Road looks like a good small shop. Sort of Overnoy central combined with the Brit version of Cory and Guilhaume.
Florian and Milena are great. They pick up a lot of stuff in France on their own so they have quite a bit of stuff that has never left France before. They also have about the best taste in music imaginable.

a little late to this posting, i can't believe no one has mentioned rsj cafe on coin street near waterloo station.

very good menu of french cuisine, but the real draw is the wine list-- a 3 ring binder of loire valley wines--est. 30+ pages. pages of anjou, pages of saumur, pages of vouvray, chinon, bourgueil, sancerre, etc. you get the drift. huet back to the 50's. and yes, on the last page there are a couple few bordeaux and burgundy for complete idiots.

I'm still paying attention. And always happy to swill down as much bourgueil as possible.

I like RSJ. But it's very much the girl next door, food wise. And there are lots of very good lists nowadays.

London is a big place. Chez Bruce & La Trompette are really good but quite awkward to get to. If you want to stay central, Murano (Mayfair) was the best meal I've had in London for a while; smart but innovative Italian with a good wine list.
Le Gavroche is still one of the best for atmosphere and sense of occasion, especially if you can stick to the great value lunch menu (if you stray into A la Carte you will be punished). Both of these will need advance booking.
Galvin Bistro De Luxe on Baker Street has good, if fairly simple (bistro) food, but with a fairly disorderly wine list and nice style.
Good Hunting.
