Internet rumor has it that prior to 1999 they were inhabited by aliens who hated wine but loved . . . well, something else. From 1999 forward, the good guys came back, defeated the aliens and the kingdom of wine lovers was restored.
Personal experience is that the 1999 vintage worked pretty well - going backwards and forwards are things I have not done.

I bought 4 of his lieu-dit V-R les Reas via the interwebs and had the same thought when I first saw the labels; both the font and the ubiquitous Kermit Lynch name were a bit repulsive.

But the 2001 was quite tasty in 2009. Typical of Vosne, maybe needing a little more time for the oak to recede. I have one in the drinking queue. Have two of 2001 Echezeaux as well, but will let them sit for a while if I can.

I see from inventory list that I have a good number of '99s (echezaux and reas and VR 1er); i'll have to dig some out when it gets cooler. I should have at least one '95 Echezaux; i recall it being a bit hard and harsh back in the early part of this century, and the reas even more so.
 
Thanks for the comments. Had the 99 Echezeaux and I found it really lively, actually delicious and extremely satisfying in that gotta have a burgundy now, way. The 2010 VR VV was also drinking suprisingly well, and considering the 100% new oak, handling well. Whites I find can't take the oak at all, a shame. For a no-sulfur guy in Vosne, pretty ballsy stuff.
 
I have some '98 Echx somewhere. Somewhat ho hum, but worth the rediculous close out tarrif ($20). I reckon I should conduct a expedition.
