Shinn Estates, as an example, is in Matituck = 80+ mi E of NYC

Yes. The wine country on LI is about a 1 3/4 hour drive from the city with no traffic, so you're looking at upwards of 3 hours in the best possible circs. It's like saying, "I'll be in the Loire Valley, any good Alsatian producers?"
I think there are wineries in the Hudson Valley that would be closer to you.

I was once the geography and history person on a 3 person Trivial Pursuit team that won in two turns, so it just made me laugh. I am certainly not a grammar pedant, but when it comes to geography...
We would be driving to New London and taking the ferry and making a day of it...no way would we drive through the City. It may be hard to believe, but all life does not revolve around NYC.
But, I do appreciate the Hudson River ideas. So we may actually go in that direction instead.

The ferry is also pretty far in the other direction, fwiw.
I didn't think you were unaware of the geography, but perhaps that you were ignoring closer resources, especially since, well, the quality might be comparable for all I know (I don't know).

Shinn is OK. I actually thought their distillates were more interesting than their wines. Its off the main road and is tour group unfriendly and very laid back. LI Wine just isn't great, but its nice as a day trip. Also some of the wineries are very uh...Long Island, which amuses me. I'm permitted to say that. I know the entire Billy Joel catalog from memory.
Channing Daughters is in Bridgehampton so kind of a hike, and probably not worth the drive from Shinn unless you have a reason to be on the South Fork.
Absolutely do not take the Ferry. 95 in CT is just as bad if not worse than the LIE and then the ferry itself takes 2 hours. You don't actually drive through the city proper - just the east Bronx and very Eastern Queens. Traffic is tolerable as long as it isn't rush hour. You get on/get off the LIE after the worst of the congestion. I'd guess an 1 hr 45 - 2 Hr is about right depending on where you are in Putnam County.
If you do go out there make sure you hit a bunch of farmstands and Briermere for pie. Also North Fork Kitchen and Inn in Southhold is the best restaurant on the East End. They also have a cool little food truck thing going on in the back parking lot as well if you want something more casual ( think its 10-3). Greenport has some nice casual dining options as well. Wines lists as a rule suck tho.
