table grapes

At my local Greenmarket today, the folks from Buzzard Crest winery had bins of table grapes. They had Concord, of course, but they also had several others with wonderful names: Mars, Jupiter, Himrod, Canadice....

I bought Mars and Jupiter. Mars comes in tightly-packed, oblong clusters, with picture-perfect dark blue color with pale blue highlights. It does indeed taste a little like Concord (which is a good thing for a table grape).

I'll eat the Jupiter tomorrow but even from my table samples I can tell there's muscat back in its heritage.

I hope these folks have more grapes next week! (And I love it that the old lady at the cash box was wearing a button that said "Grannie's Peace Brigade". She said she's in the grape business because she likes the juice.)

Thank you, Jeff. This is awesome. I love table grapes.

The muscat de Hambourg in France is my favorite. But I am now keen to try North American varieties.

This week I bought: Canadice, Lakemont, and more Mars. (No Himrod available.) They also had Marquis but they said it would be better next week.

I saw a lot of people buying Concord. I guess more folks make jam in Brooklyn than I thought?

You don't like eating concord grapes straight? I find it one of the nice fall pleasures. Such a unique flavor.

Falls under the yahbut category: I weary of dealing with the pips. If I can get flavorful grapes sans....

all I taste is FOXYFOXYFOXY. And not in a good way. I guess I'm a bad locavore, but I think Labrusca or most of its its hybrids are repulsive in any form.
