What do people drink with sushi?

Shch
is my beverage of choice. Not sure if it has been mentioned.

Japanese or Korean?

Do you have a preference for starch/fruit base?

Both and either.

Not sure.

Just when I was started to get a handle on it and had a variety to choose from (courtesy of the local Japanese market) I moved back to NC.

I have 2 choices at my favorite Japanese place and 1 choice at my favorite Korean BBQ.

Living in NC isn't always better.

The close proximity to Spanish wine importers is a nicety, though.

I'd be interested in a discourse on Shōchū differences if you have the inclination.

I noticed different fruit sources and aging regimens among Japanese producers and also found that my tastes did not always correlate with price and that it was generally difficult for me to generalize.

That's always tough for me since my entire life is based on summarizing data.

I don't know enough to go on long form about it. When I tasted through a bunch awhile back, the range of differences was pretty stark. And it sort of seemed like mezcal seems to me, that you can have complete garbage in one label, and sublime material in another.

There are a more than a couple venues in midtown that sport a wide selection. I'm just worried that I don't have the sort of commitment in me at the moment to taste through what would be required to get a firm grasp on the subject.

Maybe down the line when I have some free time, excess cash, and nothing to do the next few mornings.

Shochu leads to karaoke more often than not.
That alone is reason enough to keep it off a list of preferred beverages.

Hard to be more persuasive than that.

Regarding the pernicious effects of shochu consumption?
I could be, but there are statute of limitations issues to consider....

you have to embrace the karaoke! it tends to get a bad rap in the west, associated as it can be with drunk frat boys. once you experience it in asia, it changes your entire perspective (associated as it can be with drunk expat boys).

You haven't heard my version of My Way. Nor of Lonely at the Top.

That was my experience in tasting through those that I did. I couldn't find any discernible pattern.

There are a more than a couple venues in midtown that sport a wide selection.

If you wouldn't mind sharing names, it may be what I do for lunch if I come to the Dressner tasting next week.

last night i was at east with the unicef crew, 44th st bet. 2nd and 3rd, where we had many nice shochu. i imagine that there are better places, though. does saka gura have shochu?

Midtown in the 40's around Grand Central is basically Japanese bar central. Lots of little places with unclear signage and long back bars. I only really know about them myself because I used to work nearby, in Tudor City. If you were to walk in a 3 block radius of Sushi Yasuda, I think that you will find the sorts of places I am talking about.

What Levi said.

Also, Kori around the corner from my apt has a big shochu thing going on, lots of cocktails. I confess I've only had it once or twice. I'm not a big spirits guy, unless Jay Miller is over, of course.
