2011 Pine Ridge Chenin/Viognier - I have fond memories of this wine from years ago but it didnt' live up to them. Pleasant but no more.

2011 La Vieille Ferme - Everyone enjoyed this wine very much and guesses were all over the place and for much more expensive wines. While I generally use the LVF wines for coooking the blanc in particular does not disgrace itself for drinking. Only Josh guessed Rhone white. A lot of people guessed Riesling, esp. Austrian. Some guesses of Muscat.

NV Andre Beaufort Rose Champagne - corked
NV Pierre Peters Rose Champagne - not one of the best examples of this (or maybe the food match didn't work?). After I made the mistake of commenting that it was one of my favorite Roses Gil (without tasting it) asked "Does Pierre Peters make a Rose?"

2009 Cos Cerasuolo di Vittoria
2009 Occhipinti Il Frappato
A disappointing showing for the Cos, I liked it but it definitely had an element of ash and (according to several people) soap. The Occipinti was a lovely layered wine. Guesses were 2008 Anderson valley pinot because of the ashy note.

1990 Fontodi Vigna Del Sorbo
1999 Soldera Case Basse
This was a gorgeous flight. The Fontodi more than held it's own against the Soldera and there was considerable debate as to which was better. Many, myself included, thought the Soldera would benefit from more time and the Fontodi was at peak. But both were beautiful. Initial guesses were all in Bordeaux but several people said it was missing some elements that said Cabernet. Once I told them there was no Cabernet or Merlot in the wines guessing immediately went to Tuscany.

1994 Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon
1999 Karl Lawrence 'Herb Lamb' Cabernet Sauvignon
Everyone agreed that the the KL was CA Cabernet and the Henschke was left bank Bordeaux. The KL was much better than a 2004 Dr. Crane I opened a few weeks ago. It was beautiful with lush yet balanced fruit but the Henschke stood out as several people's WOTN. Structured, balanced, complex.

No one had trouble identifying the
Pedro Romero VORS Amontillado Viejisimo as Sherry but the guesses went through Oloroso, Palo Cortado, and Manzanilla before hitting Amontillado (at least they ruled out Fino). One of my favorite Amontillados, it shows a gorgeous complexity and great nose.

Everyone had trouble identifying the '77 Warres and I'm not surprised. It was an auction purchase (winebid) and not in great shape. I've had much better examples of this.

Thanks again for a great lineup of food and wines, and your hospitality.

I loved the Henschke, the Soldera, the Amontillado and a couple of the non-blind wines later - the La Bota PX #25 and the 1898 Madeira were also quite lovely.

I struggled with the Cos - found the ashy flavours very strong, to the point that they dominated pretty much everything else.

The mushroom soup was fantastic. I'll have to try that recipe soon.

Heston Blumenthal At Home is uneven, calls for many ingredients that aren't readily available outside of England and has a fair amount of errata but when the recipes work they're really, really good. This is one of the good ones.
