Inexplicably, Barbra's voice rang in my head with "you don't send me samples anymore", as I read this

If you'll pardon the interruption, by sheer coincidence I found myself at Vivant Cave the night after Bruno Verjus published the email exchange, and had the opportunity to chat with Pierre Jancou for a good long while.

In the aftermath, what pissed him off wasn't the request for a comped meal (he hardly needs the publicity, nor more requests for seats in his tiny restaurant), it was being called stingy. About which he ranted for quite some time. I'd bet that several days later, that's still what's bothering him most about this affair.

Thanks for the scoop. I assumed from reading the emails that it was the editors response that pissed him off.

About fifteen years ago, I asked an outstanding estate in the south of France why their wines were always ignored by a major French wine publication when it talked of wines of the particular appellation or the south of France in general. The response was that the publication demanded a case of wine for each reviewer for each wine to be reviewed.

In fairness, there have been changes in personnel and ownership at this publication and the estate is now reviewed (and given top marks).
