1998 Fontanabianca Sori Burdin Barbaresco, alc 14%, $61: An interestingly advanced color of dark purple with thinning and browning at the edges... initally a little VA that blew off quickly and was replaced by violets, tar and leather..wonderful kirsch, prune and leather notes on the palate.. tannins are minor and the acidity is somewhat low... the finish builds in intensity and becomes more leather-y with leaf and dirt notes..really comes alive with the food... an impressive showing...seems to be at "a happy place"
 
Huh, I had a 97 of the same and I recall it also looked a tad too far along. The color and bricking seemed to indicate the wine was a touch past its prime. A few minutes in the glass, however, and it all came together quite well. The 97 is drinking well, and I'm not surprised to hear positive thoughts on the 98.
 
Had a taste of the '01 a couple weeks ago. Hated that. Overextracted, blocky, oaky, going over the hill, and all-around gross. Glad your earlier vintages were showing better.
 
Are '97's ready to drink across the board. I'm curious specifically about Paitin Sori Paitin Barbaresco '97, if anyone has had it. Also 1990. From the little research I've done, it seems like I should drink the '97 before the '90.

'Got a 1999 in the drink rack at my house. Probably too early but I'll make sure its with big food.

I don't know about across the board, but so far 97's and 98's seem to be drinking pretty well. Some producer's wines may take a bit more time. However, I'd drink a 97 Paitin...

99's all seem pretty hard to me, it may be awhile before these really open. And I'd wait a bit on 90's. If you've waited this long, might as well wait a bit longer.
