Oloroso

I've been reading the new Penguin translation over the past years (is this a terrible thing to say that it takes me years to read through the whole thing?) and it seems great to me. Far superior to the Finnish translation and also superior and not so purple in prose as the Scott-Moncrieff - Kilmartin. Is the original very purple?

Moncrief's translation is one one either loves or doesn't. I would guess there are more inaccuracies than there are rats in the NY subway. And the titles are all one might say aspirational. Still, it has a tone and as someone who has read both, I'd say there is something like a correspondence between his tone in English and Proust's in French, despite inaccuracies. I don't know if I'd call either of them purple, but perhaps each is yellow in its own way (this of course is another way of saying what Sharon did).

As I said, I have no opinion about the Penguin or about the Enright reboot of the Kilmartin Moncrief.
