Sharon, I hope I have another bottle of this; I want you taste this.....

2002 JJ Christoffel, Urziger Wurzgarten spatlese. (AP 2 602 041 004 03). Abv 8%.

Utterly brilliant. More savory than sweet (but in fairness, plenty lush and sweet). Lithe and supple. Fall afternoon sunlight in a glass. The balance is so superb, it makes me giggle. Lovely touch of salinity on the finish.

I am sorry to inform you that Sharon is in hiding somewhere in Central America or the Russian steppe.

Oh, all right... hm... that sounds good, if the savory holds its part.

RS is not kryptonite....

Oh man. I remember that stuff. I might have a buried bottle, but I think I drank the last a couple years back. Totally made me giggle, too. Right on.

The savory nature of some of the 02s recently unearthed is uncanny.

The Uriziger wurzgarten much more than the erdener treppchen. But I agree, the 02's, always nice, now are really coming out singing.

Yeah, some of us said years ago that there was more good (and in many cases better) wine in Germany in 2002 than 2001, likewise 2004 vs. 2005. But, you know, tastes vary.

Not at all inconsistent with what I wrote.

No, although one could refer to that, too. I was referencing the first sentence.

of course you did, and you knew that I knew that you did :)

but silliness aside, I would caution against citing taste considerations in 01/02 case too definitively, much more so than for 04/05; I've already been pleasantly surprised by both on multiple occasions, and they don't seem to compare fairly at given points in time

Opened a bottle of the '02 UW Auslese on Sunday, 9/4. I didn't write down the AP no. - apologies. Notes:

Very nice. Needs time to air after opening; serve cool-to-cold. Still rather sweet for my preferences, but, then, it is an Auslese. The acidity is not overwhelmed. May best to let this sit a few years, if you are not a 'chasseur du sucre.'

Update, 9/16: On opening a regular bottle of wine, I often pour half of it off into a clean 375 right away and seal it tightly. In this case, I opened the 375 at the end of last week, when it showed sweet and soft, had most of the rest two days ago - still soft - and finished the last inch or so yesterday, when it showed at its best, the sugar level finally falling sufficiently low that a crystaline acid structure was uncloaked and pounded the palate, that way it should in a good MSR.

The moral is, if you are not fond of youthful Süssigkeit, give the Christoffel 2002 Ausleses ample additional time in the cellar - for me, another 5-10 years.
