Maybe Mark Lipton can find the alt.food.wine originals, probably ca. 1997 or 1998. Callahan observed that Parker's notes and scores on two vintages of some particular Chateauneuf (IIRC) were extremely similar. RC had detected a total change in style between the two vintages, and wondered whether RP had actually tasted both wines. He wondered aloud on usenet.
He fairly quickly got a letter from RP's publisher's lawyer threatening him with a defamation suit. Hard to believe they did this without consulting RP.
I told Callahan that people should raise some money and tell them to pound sand. Did they really want a trial where one major question of fact would be whether RP actually tastes the wines he reviews? It seemed unlikely to make sense for RP or his publisher.
But in true SLAPP fashion, RC was discouraged and posted some retraction or another and that was that.

Speaking of Usenet dustups taken to the legal world, check out Novins v. Cannon for the most far-reaching example.
