Anyone go to the N rhone thing? I'm interested to hear some thoughts on the wines and their relative maturity.
 
Don't know, don't recall if I was either, but a friend sent me this. He didn't go so I can't ask him.

Gentaz-Dervieux Cote Rotie Cote Brune 1991, 1990, 1989, 1988
Clape Cornas 1991, 1990, 1989, 1988
Jamet Cote Rotie 1991, 1990, 1989, 1988
Noel Verset Cornas 1991, 1990, 1989, 1988

I hope everyone who went who wasn't me got poisoned. That is a dream line up. Minus some Chave and Trollat, those are all amongst the best Northern Rhone wines I've ever had.
 
I was there. I have more detailed notes. Overall spectacular night.

Some quick thoughts:

- The Verset and Jamets were the stand-outs and on this night were outstanding

- 1988 was by far the best flight

- The Gentaz were closed down and big disappointments with the exception of the 88

- The 91 and 90 Clape had a weird medicinal note and were not very pleasant although food did help

Mannie provided a lot of historical context and detailed specific winemaker information. He noted that Gentaz was the only one that used Burgundy sized barrels (although they were very old)

I just refuse to believe that wines like this can't still be made!

p.s. Sad to say but there were some heavy collectors at the dinner and I expect these wines to trade in the $1,000 - $2,000 range very soon. Gentaz is already there.

I hear what you are saying and I rarely, if ever, go to these types of tasting. I made an exception because it is near impossible to taste these wines. It was extremely cool to taste four producers from four vintages and to have all 16 glasses in front of you. Both the style of the producer and the clarity of the vintage were so apparent.
 
I had 91 Gentaz blind, in the spring. It had been decanted, but took a good hour after initial pours to show its stuff. It was insanely good.

I have had it several times and it has always been amazing. The wines were all decanted prior to the dinner and we all kept some in our glasses to the end. The 91 seemed like it was popping its head out after about an hour and then it shut down again.

Surprised about the Clape not showing better, 91 and 88/89 Clape are some of my favorites. Not surprised about the Gentaz showing shut down, we opened 89 and 90 not long ago and found them better with a lot of time but not immediately appealing - which was one of the reasons I was curious. Our night was Gentaz/Jamet/Jasmin and we added 83 but had a lot less total bottles and did not include 91.

I'm quite sure that similar wines can be made. Most of the vines are still there, the winemakers just need to step away from the cookbooks.

Actually, maybe I was and balked at the expense.

The last time I bought into a wonderful RWC dinner I couldn't go. Ouch!
