To Lay Me Down

I've grown to hate this fucking song. Despise it. Every damn show whenever the KoolAid was about to peak, this song would appear. Instead of twirling with tie-dyed vixens I'd be stuck in the shadows catatonically mumbling "make it stop, please, please, make it stop". It didn't matter if the dosage was 2 hours before show time or when the lights went down, whether it was purple, orange, Disney-inspired, organic, or some Owlsley chain-clipping experiment, when peakage hit, Jerry would pull out this fucker to taunt me.

Today, I'm driving around sunny Scottsdale going to pick up a few more bottles of the wine below. I'm listening to Winterland 11/11/73, happy as can be, and you-know-what appears as song 3 or 4 in the first set, sending me into a near proverbial brown acid flashback, reaching to change the station. But I listened, a bit jittery at first, but I listened, and hell, this is good. Jerry is mournful and intricately delicate, the harmonies are tight, the song touched me.

2005 Domaine d'Orfeuilles Vouvray Silex (Loire) A few sheeps worth of wool draped over chalky limestone and lemon. Its wonderfully dry and crisp with crunchy pink grapefruit acids on the finish. Good enough to pick up a few more to lay down.

It is a touching song, but one has to be in the right mood - suicidal.

I have been called a fake Deadhead for this, but I never appreciated Jerry's ballads all that much.

Wow, good call(s).

I don't understand, When I went there, it didn't matter what you drank. Beer, wine, whatever. Drink a Savenierres - you won't taste it.

Nice notes.

I've had the 2004 (great, linear and precise) and 2006 (eh, muddled) d'Orfeuilles Silex, somehow the 2005 evaded me.

This is the first vintage for me. Thanks for the warning on the '06

Bill, I wish I had been at more shows when Jerry pulled out that song. I've always loved it. Pretty much a rarity. "Comes a Time", too. He didn't play that often enough for me. I got reallll tired of "Black Peter". Only versions I still very much enjoy are the acoustic ones from 1970.

The combo of "Black Peter" into "Throwing Stones" would generally drive me from the building.

I'm with you and David on "Comes a Time". I haven't heard an acoustic Black Peter in a while. Might have to dredge one up.

Man, you Deadheads really crack me up. Of course, I'm still recovering from going to Bill Graham's ill-conceived Who/Dead double bill in '73.

What was ill-conceived about that bill? Just look at the line-ups Bill put together at the Fillmores and Winterland. Those mixed musical genres in a big way.

I went the 2nd day and had a blast. It was pretty amusing watching the Dead blow The Who off the stage (I know, hard to imagine, but Pete Townshend admitted as such). The Who were good that day, but not great. I saw them earlier in the year at Winterland and they leveled the joint. That show is in my all-time Top 10 list.

BTW, those shows were in Oct. 76.

Argh. You're right, Larry. I was in high school then (and I didn't start until '74). By ill-conceived, I mean that I could hardly imagine two less-compatible fan bases. At the show I was at (I no longer recall which), when the Who departed the stage, a large chunk of the audience got up and walked out. At least they didn't boo the Dead, which is probably what would have resulted had they stayed. It was a very memorable show, though, and in my all-time Top 10 (along with The Last Waltz) too. I miss the ol' days of BGP.

I have. Absolutely amazing stuff on there. There are shareware tools that allow one to capture streaming audio. I would've started doing so (and then burn CDs), but my sound card acts flaky with such tools.
