Catherine Le Goeuil Carianne Cuvee Lea Felsch 2005- I'm sure I've missed a previous post on this one, but I wanted to share. Dark and brooding in the glass. I hate to use the word "gob" but this is certainly gobby. After giving a quick spank, it cries out black fruits, underbrush, mushrooms, and a sigh of minerality. I don't know how to describe the mouthfeel so much, other than to say it was like finding that perfect fitting pair of leather gloves in the Sale bin on a below freezing day. I drank this with Broiled Salmon, sauteed mushrooms, and a beet salad with fried prosciuito and sage with a shallot red wine reduction. Gorgeous with the salmon and mushrooms.
Not quite as good (to my humble palette), Charles Schleret Sylvaner Cuvee Reserve 2004- The color is of a young blonde adolescent, dawning fleece pajamas, it breathes lemony, mineral, and slight petrol. Sipping right now, it is somewhat lacking to me. I have always found Sylvaner to be lacking, say in comparison to Riesling, and this one lives up to expectations. Slightly vegetal and hints of botrytis. It's just not really doing it for me. And dipping into my Thanksgiving oysters from the Eastern Shore early does nothing to help the situation, other than kill the nice salinity of the oyster.
