Say Goodbye to Clape

What's so awful about Chapoutier, anyway, besides the high points for and the expense of the uber-cuvees? (I'm a bit partial to his whites)

I don't find the wines particularly awful. A few come across a bit oaky, others don't. But all the ones I've had were incredibly boring.

Agreed; the main complaint is lack of character.

Occasionally, Verset has too much character (brett?).

Oh, I haven't had many lately, but there used to be other grounds for complaint in my book--overripeness, too much wood, vulgar thick textures, stuff like that.

But for all I know about recent vintages, they could taste like Pineau d'Aunis.

They use those expensive tricks on the Cote-Rotie. Cornas is just a rustic little wine, don't you know.

Speaking of which, I had the 2008 Rouge Gorge from Bellivière over the weekend. Amazing! It's filled out and become smooth with lovely berry fruit in the mouth and still some of the white pepper in the nose. Yeah, baby!!!

Oh yeah, and a 2008 Brézème from some guy with the same name ain't too bad, either, tonight.

Same newsletter...1990 Verset...$450. Clape is a bargain!
I'm holding out selling until they reach Roumier Musigny prices, or at least Roumier Bonnes-Mares.

The RWC offer today should give you a good idea on pricing of late...crap.

This prompted me to look at that offer and those prices. '98 Clape for $200? Mine haven't been that enjoyable, and I'd be very surprised if my 1999s turn out to be $250 experiences. 2002 Verset for $165? I had six bottles of that--they were nice wines that showed true Verset character but the vintage was such a washout it never occurred to me to age them for very long. Maybe I was mistaken, but I'd doubt it. Within the last six months I purchased 1999 Verset--a darn near perfect wine in my book--for $81 a bottle (from a store with just about ideal storage that had been hanging onto them since release). Maybe RWC will sell out its inventory but the people buying those wines sure are paying inflated prices. Count me among those who never expected to see this happen to Cornas.
