Nearly extinct

Mark Svereika
Nusserhof, Alto Adige, Blaterle, 2009

This has "hipster" written all over it:
Hipster importer : LDM
Almost extinct grape variety: Blaterle
Natural winemaker...
so why didn't I like it? Well, I was first put off by the weird floral-petroleum scents, a strange combination of the flowery with flavors coming out of a gasoline pump lending a very distilled taste to it that wouldn't have been out of place in a naphtha cracker. Then, this was all covered over by cheap hotel room sanitizer. Really, I wanted so badly to like this wine, I really did, but if this is any indication of the heights of blaterle, let 'em go extinct. 12%

That's a couple of vintages old. Not a wine to hold. All that was around here went fast.

It was good enough when it was released.

Huh?? It's a current item Chambers, how can it be old?? I just bought it in fall. Perhaps wines get shipped faster in a state with less red tape.

There's a ringing endorsement.

An unworthy remark.

Blatterle makes a fun little table wine: give it a slurp and move on. Don't expect it to behave like Corton Charlemagne or Clos du Bourg.
