G Descombes Brouilly 2005

This may be a "Duh, Bill" statement, but tonight is my virgin experience with Descombes. Recommended by a wine merchant that I trust, I picked it up without really looking at it, other than noticing the importer on the back label. I will certainly look for more bottles, to experience the evolution...

This isn't just a Wow! wine. This is a mood brightener. It is making my roasting chicken seem other-worldly. Maybe the only Beaujolais that I have had to date that tops it, is Jean Folliard's, but completely different, despite the similar packaging (red wax capsule).

What is your favorite all time Cru Beaujolais?

Do you think that this wine is ready to go? I just picked up a bottle recently and had put it away with most of my other '05 Crus. As for an all-time favorite Cru, it might have to be Lapierre Morgon, but that's just because I've had more of it than any other, most likely.

I wish I had picked up more of the '05 Descombes (especially the Morgon). It was just a touch more expensive than I would have hoped and, consequently, I was penny wise and pound foolish.

Mark, it's not "ready to go," however the balance and harmony were magnificent. I hope I can find some more bottles of it.

Ben, it is pricey, but I get a pretty fair discount, being that I am "in the trade." But, I think it is worth the full mark-up.

I was swayed by the purple prose at CS to buy a couple of the Morgan, though I blushed to find myself paying that price. I'll hang on to these for a while - thanks for your note.

I sympathize. I've been drinking a lot of Descombes' '06 Regnie, and am somewhat shocked to be paying that price for a cru beaujolais.

Still, well worth the price for something that stays interesting over an entire evening. Chameleon wine.

Tonight Jean was in need of a mood enhancer, so down to cellar and up with the title wine. Yes, it is a weighty Brouilly and, yes, it's got bags of fruit, but it's also a meaty little mother with no shortage of Bretty overlay to the fruit (not pushing my tolerance, though) and in so many does remind one of parts Northward. Maybe this will get better with further age, but it's damn fine right now, thankyouverymuch.
